In our liberal democracy, our government tries to keep democracy seperate from religion. This causes many issues in our society. Let me start by stating how upset I am that this year I have class on Good Friday! Every year on Good Friday I have spent the day with my family getting ready for Easter and also going to church. Im very frustrated that I will have to sit in class that morning then still have to drive two hours just to get home. In some ways I feel yes it is important to keep religion seperate from politics and governement, but I feel some exceptions should be made, and this is one of them.
We have made a big step up from where we used to be. According to Marc D. Stern the liberal democracy is at least no longer penalizing people for having different religious views. Thats a plus at least. By keeping religion seperate from government we have been able to practice our religous beliefs in the open and worshiping however and whenever we like as long as it doesn't harm another person. But can every person agree that this is a good thing? According to Austin Cline. "To what degree are religion and democracy compatible? Some argue that in order for a democratic state to function, religion should be kept separate from the government. Others argue that a secular state is wrong and that democracy requires religion in order to be sufficiently moral." I don't think the government will ever tuelly make everyone happy, but from my point of view I feel that having good morals is very helpful when it comes to the way the government works. Does it take having a strong faith to have good morals? I don't believe so, but I do feel it can be very helpful.
